The American Civil War, a war over black slavery, was the defining event in American history.
Southern whites, insisting on the right to continue enslaving black Americans in perpetuity, went to war against northern states. Northern Americans, while often far from believing in true human equality, fought to eradicate human slavery and thus save the Union.
Winning the war, the Union emancipated African Americans from the bondage of slavery. But in the hundred years following, white southerners continued marginalizing, oppressing and terrorizing black people, lynching many thousands.
Today, national Battlefields and monuments stand as stark reminders of how far America has come since the days of slavery, and how far we have yet to go to achieve true human equality.
